November Angel

Inspired by Mary Hockenberry’s marvelous photo. November is always a terrible month to get through–too many past losses to commemorate. I finally decided to paint an angel to comfort myself through this chill and dreary time.

Aha! I was never happy with the original painting (acrylic on canvas). So I started playing around with picnik and inverted it, then adjusted the color. Bingo! Something alchemic happened and now the image is more supernatural and mysterious…a computer can be a wonderful tool for planning…

A new watercolor, about 12″ x 8″. I don’t do architecture, so this represents a major stretch for me! Some liberties taken with the colors, just for fun…

I decided that it is time to really explore painting in water colors. I’ve been nervous about using them all my life, and only applied them to very small pieces. At least I’ve graduated to a larger format, and I’m not unhappy with the results.

Oil on canvas, 22″ x 28″

I started this painting several years ago and never felt very good about it; consequently it got stuck in a stack of paintings and was forgotten. I was burrowing through the stack back in May when my painting buddy was in town for a visit; she spotted it and praised it. Consequently I looked at it with new eyes and realized that it simply wasn’t finished! A bit more paint and polish and it was done. Just goes to show that sometimes a failed work just isn’t quite completed!

Bumblebee and lavender

A wonderful, happy accident! I was hoping to get a closeup of the bumblebees as they swarmed through the lavender blossoms, but the crazy bugs were not sitting still long enough for me to focus! So I decided to just point, shoot, and hope…and this one turned out!

I almost didn’t finish this painting, but after several years, the canvas resurfaced and I decided to make an attempt. Surprise, surprise, I was happy with the results! Never give up…and if you can’t finish it, just paint over it!

Oil on canvas; 24″ x 30″
I painted this on commission for my neighbors; it truly is an idyllic place to be in every season. St. John’s wort, miniature hollyhocks, irises, many different herbs, annuals and perennials abound. I’ve spent many happy times in good company, surrounded by incredible beauty. (As much as I enjoy growing things, I’ve never been a true “gardener…”)
